The SQUELCH control on a VHF transceiver:

• A.Adjusts the transmitter power output to match the antenna impedance and maximise range
• B.Suppresses background hiss when no useful signal is present while still allowing wanted signals to break through.
• C.Changes the operating frequency automatically when a stronger station is detected nearby
• D.Amplifies weak received signals — the squelch acts as a low-noise preamplifier for faint signals
